This is a wonderful companion book to Lynn Plourdes Baby Bears Not Hibernating. Baby Bear is so tired because he did not get to sleep early enough in the winter. His parents cant wake him, so they head off to get food with the hope that he will wake up when they get back.
I have loved Jon Mooallems work whenever I came across it in the New York Times Magazine, so I went into this book expecting to like it, but instead I was blown away.He takes a simple premise - what does animal conservation mean and why do we do it. - and turns it into a profound look at humankinds place in the natural world, what we do to try to save threatened, endangered, and nearly extinct species, and why bother. In addition to being rich with insight and engagingly written, its clear that Mooallem has spent an inordinate amount of time thinking about issues related to ecosystem, ecology, biodiversity, and society, and it shows throughout the book. This quote struck me as a fine synopsis of the majesty of Wild Ones:Page 197: By the late 1940s, there were only about thirty whooping cranes left on Earth, and, for better or worse, America was about to level the clobbering weight of its attention on two of them.If you love animals, or love someone who loves animals, or are concerned about the state of the global environment and humanitys effect on it, or ever appreciate a polar bear in a Coca-Cola ad, this book is worth a read..

This books target audience is English-speaking go players [surprise!]. Yuan Zhou reviews each of the five games in 2016s historic computer-vs-human match between AlphaGo and Lee Sedol.Zhou presents the game analyses using his typical clear and lucid style, explaining the reasons behind the moves and providing diagrams for difficult variations. He does not mind using a board diagram for a single move if that move deserves special attention. This was the first time that a computer program definitively beat up on a 9 Dan professional human player. As such it received lots of attention in the go world, and even outside of it by the general press. Since then, several of AlphaGos moves and strategies have been studied and are being experimented with by current pros.I am grateful to Zhou for making his review of these games available.
